(WaPo) — House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is leading a congressional delegation to Italy, the Democratic leader’s office announced Friday morning. Pelosi and Reps. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.), John Mica (R-Fla.), Leonard Boswell (D-Iowa) and Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.) arrived in Italy on Friday morning. They are slated to meet with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano, President of the Chamber of Deputies Gianfranco Fini and members of the Italian parliament. The delegation will also visit with American troops stationed in the country and will receive briefings on U.S. military support operations in Africa and South Asia, according a statement issued by Pelosi’s office.

“I am honored to visit Italy with a bipartisan Congressional delegation to mark the 150th anniversary of Italian unification,” Pelosi said in a statement. “This is a time to celebrate the birth of modern Italy and the brave patriots who made it possible. It is also an opportunity to honor the ties between the United States and Italy: America is a land discovered by an Italian, named for an Italian, and built by millions of Italian Americans. Our shared history and culture only serve to strengthen the U.S.-Italy alliance in this new century, and through the Italian American community, there are literally millions of bridges between our two nations.”

The visit, Pelosi’s first official overseas trip this year, comes on the first day of a week-long congressional recess; the House returns on March 29 (read more)
